Better Height, Better Heart!

Think your ABC adjustments are just taking care of your muscles, joints and discs?!

The following three peer-reviewed medical journal papers share a common theme, that your posture correlates significantly with your cardiovascular health. So how’s your posture looking?

The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (2004): Hyperkyphotic Posture Predicts Mortality in Older Community-Dwelling Men and Women: a Prospective Study

This study, by a team of MD’s, looked at older men and women with hyperkyphotic (stooped) posture. It was measured by how much height was needed under their head when lying on their backs to keep their heads from needing to extend (or tip back). They found that the more stoop (or the more height needed to keep their head neutral when lying flat on their back) the higher the mortality rate. Cause specific analysis showed this hyperkyphotic shape was specifically associated with an increased rate of death due to atherosclerosis.

Archive of Internal Medicine (2006): Height Loss in Older Men Associations With Total Mortality and Incidence of Cardiovascular Disease

In this study over 4000 men had their height measured between age 40 and 59 then again 20 years later (60-79 years old). They were then monitored over subsequent years. They found that marked height loss (3cm) in older men was found to be independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and coronary heart disease.

American Journal of Pain Management (1994): Postural and respiratory modulation of autonomic function, pain and health.

This study noted that “spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture”. And that “The most significant influences of posture are upon respiration, oxygenation, and sympathetic function”.
